'To Apple, Love Taylor'

Taylor Swift, writing on her Tumblr about Apple deciding not to pay royalties for music streamed on Apple Music during a user's three-month trial:

Three months is a long time to go unpaid, and it is unfair to ask anyone to work for nothing. I say this with love, reverence, and admiration for everything else Apple has done. I hope that soon I can join them in the progression towards a streaming model that seems fair to those who create this music. I think this could be the platform that gets it right.

I have to agree with her, and people can be super cynical about this situation (both from the perspective of Taylor and from Apple), but the reality is that asking someone to just give their work up for three months without any sort of compensation is bizarre and unfair. I'm not really sure what Apple was expecting, but this seems like a misstep from them that echoes the jumbled messaging about why Apple Music will be a worthy competitor in this space. If music really is something that runs through the veins of the company, they should understand how valuable it is to pay the artists.

Well there ya go.
